Thousands of new blogs are created every day. Why so much of people are into blogging now? Are they attracted to it because of the benefits it may offer to you in your personal life as well as for any business you run? Do they think it is an easy way to make money online? But you need to survive those crucial and toughest period until you make your blog successful in terms of generating income.

Oh! Sorry, I am not here to discuss anything that help you earn money online. I am running away from my points. Actually, I am here to discuss the benefits of having a personal blog alongside your primary blog that is a niche blog.

1.Write any subject of your choice

With a personal blog, the major advantage, anyone can enjoy, is the variety of topics they can write. Do you think your knowledge and ideas are only limited to a few particular area? That may never be the real fact. Everyone will have their views and opinions on what they see, hear and experience in their day to day life. How can you write something about your recent holiday to ‘Gods own country‘ in your technical blog? No need to say that you can’t write about the cake decoration ideas your wife or mother have in mind in one of your blogs dedicated to gadgets. Even a Christmas wish on my blog sounds to be unprofessional to many readers. I am pretty sure that having a personal blog will let me enjoy the freedom of writing about anything under the sun, as well as anything above the sun.

2.Brand yourself as an authority

A personal blog can make you brand yourself as an authority in a chosen field. You may have a niche blog or a business blog of your own. But, that may not help you brand yourself. Here, comes the advantage of using your personal blog to brand yourself as an authority in a topic or field you are good enough.

3.Platform to create an online business
When you start a personal blog, the number of audiences you may have is limited to few people who are close to you. It may not be easy for you to find some motivation to continue writing such a blog as a personal diary. I know few of those people reading this blog now might have experienced that is some point of their blogging journey. Here, I suggest you to keep motivated since you cannot rule out the fact that your personal blog may soon develop into a money making website if you carefully take the necessary and right steps. There are a lot of instances where people turned their personal blogs into high earning travel blog. Also, you might land up getting the chances of selling products that are related to the topics you are writing.

4.Improve your writing skill and style

When you are writing a blog in a particular niche, you may not be able to adopt different styles in your writing. For example, when you are writing a blog about technology or mobile phones, you can adopt only a style that is very much suitable for that kind of niche. The same author may have the ability to write a humour article that he or she will not be able to implement in a technical blog. A personal blog gives you the flexibility to try different styles of writing since you may not be posting similar kind of topics every time you publish a new blog post. Today, you may publish a humour story and tomorrow you may write something else.

5.Use your blog as a personal diary

A personal blog can be used as your personal diary if you wish. It is all up to you to decide that. It may not sound good to many people as they are not interested in revealing their personal life to others. Still for many people, they like the idea of boasting about their latest holiday destination of the brand new car they own. It acts as a medium for such people to express anything of your choice. Also, it acts similar to a social media platform where they can update all the events (happenings) in their life so that their friends and loved ones will notice that.

6.Improve traffic and ranking for your main blog

Imagine you have a personal blog with a good number of followers and traffic. Then it may help you increase the traffic and SEO ranking of your other main blog if you can make successful links to each website on a large number of articles.

7.More networking opportunities with bloggers of different niches

When you are involved with only a particular niche of blogging, you may get the chance to interact with people who are running blogs in the same niche as yours. It may not be the case with an immensely successful personal blog. Since the blog is a personal one, the followers of that blog may include readers of different niches. Hence, the chances of interacting with people from different walks of life around the globe are more compared to your niche blog.

Bottomline

It is always better to have a personal blog alongside your main blog so that you can utilize all its possibilities to achieve more heights in blogging. I would like to hear your views and opinions on this topic especially if you have a personal blog or thinking of starting one soon.

  1. Hi Reji, Great information. I do see that value of having your own personal blog so that people can get to know you a little better because people like to connect with those they know, like and trust. Though for me keeping up with two blogs is a big difficult, I’ve thought of incorporating them into through different menus. The problem may be setting it up correctly and then having the interest…but I’m thinking of attempting it. I do see where the totally personal blog could provide more of a larger stream of visitors. Thanks for all your ideas. Much appreciated.

    1. Hi, BG Jenkins,

Happy to see your valuable comments here and thank you very much for the same. I agree with your opinion that people will trust you more when they know more personal things about you. But, combining personal life in a professional blog may look totally unprofessional. Still there are so many successful blogs on the internet that is a mix of professional and personal style of writing.

Once again thank you very much for your visit and valuable comments. Looking forward to see more comments from you in future.

      Have a great day.

  2. You’ve given me food for thought here, Reji, thank you.

I started a personal blog before I started my business one. The personal blog gave way to Facebook quite a while ago. My main blog is more about helping people, much like this one, and I’m trying to widen the reader base to suit all social media users. I’m planning on creating some niche sites for earning purposes. Maybe one of those will be very successful and become my main blog 🙂

The couple of niche sites I run now have particular audiences and I wouldn’t want them to be my main sites for the reasons you give. They wouldn’t be good for branding, widespread sharing and networking.

The idea of writing a more personal blog appeals to me. Maybe I’ll do some writing and then decide if I think it interesting enough to use as blog posts.

    1. Hi Sue,

Nice to hear from you and happy to note that the post made you think about your own personal blog. I agree with your point that we should so some writing and then decide whether it is interesting enough to use as a blog post. The only disadvantage in that case is the time you might be wasting if you are not using it as a blog post.

Once again thank you very much for visiting the site and the comments. Have a great day.

  3. Hello Reji:

You have covered so much in this post! Great job!

You make a very interesting point. I recently consolidated my online world into one blog with two portals. My main site is my consulting, branding, and assisting others site. One portal leads to my personal website about my art, photography, and artistic services. The other portal is about color theory and perception. I get to “be me” by having this design! I get to show all sides of me as it were.

I think it helps to separate the focus of your blog as you say so that your viewers can decide which information they want to access. 🙂

Thank you for all of your thoughts, tips, and ideas on this matter.

Today while checking the G+ post I found this informative piece.
This is indeed good idea! in fact I never thought of it, since my page is a multi niche i never thought of starting a personal one. But this post added lot of info especially the necessity of one.
Thanks Reji for this wonderful post.

    1. Hi Brother Phil,

Thank you very much for your visit and your opinion that it is a wonderful and informative post. Regarding subscription, I think you need to do that again. Probably, there was an error when I changed settings in the theme.

Regarding a personal blog, I believe having one that is very much personal is a good idea so that we can share so many interesting things from our real life experience rather than including only business style of writing. Even though, I say like that, the main problem is the lack of time we can spend for more than one blog. I started a personal blog, but it seems really hard to find time for updating it regularly.

Once again thank you very much for your precious time visiting as well as commenting on my blog.

      Have a great time.

  5. Hi Reji,

I have two blogs. My main one covers the many aspects of blogging and marketing. Giving helpful posts to newbies to the seasoned blogger.

My other blog is strictly one that I use to interview people who have products I can affiliate.

On my main blog I’ll hint and some personal things, but I couldn’t ever imagine having a blog like a diary. My goodness…If I shared that one people’s heads will spin lol.

    1. Hi Donna,

Thank you very much for visiting and commenting on my blog. I visited your blog once or twice but never had a proper look so far. Hoping to do that today if time permits.

Regarding the post, I was actually trying to highlight the point that a personal blog gives more flexibility to add any topic of your choice. But, I definitely agree with your point that we cannot share all our personal details with everyone out there. Still it may not be a bad idea if we share the details regarding the latest holiday trip to an interesting tourist location.

Once again thank you very much for your visit.

      Have a great time.

  7. Good point, Reiji!

My first blog, started in 2003, was a personal blog for keeping my friends and far-away family in touch with us.

I’ve tried having two blogs, but it doesn’t work for me. The more I am on the internet, the more fragmented I feel! I needed to simplify, and it works much better now to have only one blog.

Since my niche is “writing”, it works well to have only one. But I agree with you 100%, that if my business and my personal life weren’t so closely related, I should have two blogs to keep them separate.

    1. Hi Willena,

Thank you very much for your valuable comments. It is always a problem managing time if we have two blogs. Since your niche is “writing”, it seems fine to add a some personal things along with that.

      Hoping to see you again.

      Have a great day.

  8. Hi Reji

Although you make some extremely good points I’m afraid I’m not tempted to start another blog LOL.

I did try this I when I first started out but found the time commitment over-whelming.

Furthermore, I take what you say about personal posts on my business blog, but I look on many of my readers as friends accompanying me through my blogging journey, not just readers.

When I went through some really bad personal times over the past months it felt like pouring my heart out to my friends, and their support and understanding just kept me going. I didn’t promote those posts much so they were probably only seen by regular readers – and they were hopefully better than just silence!

If casual visitors stumbled upon those more personal posts and didn’t understand what I was going through, no problem – I probably wouldn’t resonate with them as clients anyway.

In my offline business I have had one particular client for over 30 years and when we talk on the phone, or in emails, we share personal snippets of the trials and tribulations of business and family life. That bond is partly what glues us together when we have the inevitable ups-and-downs of any business relationship.

Just my thoughts 🙂 But not intended to detract from the excellent points you made in your article.

  9. Hi Joy,

Great to see you here and thank you very much for your valuable comments.

I agree with you that being a little bit personal on your blog is also a necessity at times in order to interact properly with your regular readers. But, when you look from a business point of view, adding personal matter gives the impression of being unprofessional. Still, as far as blogging is considered, I think we bloggers are more flexible to do whatever we like as we are the author, editor and publisher of the same. I think it is one of the great freedom that we enjoy as a blogger.

Hoping to hear your insights on the forthcoming posts too.

Keep visiting and have a great time.

  11. Hi Reji,

First time visiting your blog 🙂

I came across this post (found it on Linked In because Donna Merril “liked” it).
It’s funny that I noticed it because I had just recently started up a new blog – yet I still keep the one I had a couple of years ago.

The original one, I guess I could say, is now my personal blog. I always was I guess… if I am to be honest. I had built up some pretty cool relationships with that one, but it was never designed to be a business (unless you count the link for my book). Otherwise, like you mentioned in this post – I found that it was a perfect platform to hone in on my writing skills and share my personal thoughts.

I have every intention of keeping it, even though my primary focus will be in the new one.

    Great post.

It may seem difficult to abandon a blog that we were writing for some time. I totally agree with you that you should use that blog to enhance writing skills and also to share personal thoughts.

      Thank you for your visit.

  12. Well said, A blog is really necessary especially if you are looking at attraction marketing or self branding. Its never about the company you promote, its always about YOU. Companies will always come and go and the best thing to do is to have a nice centre source for your information where people can go and find relevant info that they can use.

    Its really that important.

Thanks for such a great article!

    1. Hi Vincent,

  13. Reji,
Important information, especially for someone just starting out. I have created several niche blogs over the years and now I have a main blog, an authority site with my name as the domain. It still is somewhat of a niche site though, since my focus is on relationships and I write mostly about love and relationships. But that is the way to go, to have a site that is personal and then branch out from there.

    Warmly,
