If you search the Internet, you will wonder with the number of posts people already published on the topic “How to start a blog?” I am not hiding the fact that I am also planning to post my own “How to start a blog?” post soon in this blog. I know the readers feel bored of at the sight of seeing the headline itself at times if they notice that the content in the post is similar to that one you already read in so many other blogs. We will discuss why there are so many such type of similar contents on the internet later as the topic I want to discuss here with you is not about “How to start a blog?” but for explaining “Why people take a decision to start a blog?”

Start blogging Reji StephensonPeople start blogging due to different reasons, and here I would like to point out some of the reasons, starting with my own experience of starting this blog. Many people start blogging very accidently while some others do start it because they might be connected to writing related activities right from a very young age.

In my case it all started once I joined a creative writing course with Writers Bureau, one of the leading providers of creative writing courses in the United Kingdom. Actually, I joined the creative writing course just to improve my skills in writing even though I was not a writer of any kind until that time. As part of the course, I had to write few articles that are to be published in an online or offline magazine and for that reason, I had the need to find a publisher by myself. After I had finished writing few such articles for the course, I started thinking of creating my own blog and publish the articles instead of looking for finding a publisher and that is how this blog was born. I started reading lot of blogs for about three weeks to get an overall idea to start a blog.

Why do people start a blog Reji Stephenson

While starting a blog for the first time, everyone makes a lot of mistakes. The biggest mistake I made on this blog is the domain name “Digital Dimensions” that may mislead readers to think of it as some website related to photography. In reality, I was actually planning to make this blog a combination of photography related contents as well as written contents related to blogging with the help of one more author who can handle all photography and video related content. As I was not able to find a suitable person, I left that idea but never changed the domain name to a different one, which is not entirely meaningful for the current contents of the blog.

When I started gathering information on how to start a blog for the first time, I was not even aware that people make money blogging. I came to know that many professional bloggers earn huge amount of money from blogging. I found the overall blogging stuff fascinating not only because of the fact that your blog can be monetized but also the reputation and friend circle you can gain from it. My network of friends started growing, and I am proud to note that I have a big list of friends from different corners of the globe that became possible only because I tried to find time for blogging even with a very hectic lifestyle. You might be knowing the real fact that it is really hard to find time for blogging if you have a full-time job, family, children and other commitments. But, thanks for blogging that made it possible to have a big list of friends.

Starting your blogging journey

I already discussed few of the things that motivated me and led me to start running this blog. Now, it is my turn to share some facts about blogging that may be the reason many people start blogging.

Before that let me answer you the first question that is mentioned in the starting of this article about similar contents like “How to start a blog?” on many of the blogs. Did you ever think why these bloggers are publishing the similar content? Do you think that they are copycats? Even though it appears to be having the similar type of content, these bloggers are never doing it purposely. I will explain that in a little more clear manner. Every single day, lakhs of new blogs are being created. Imagine that a thousand among such blogs are in the blogging niche where the blog author likes to give blogging tips and tutorials to the newbie bloggers. Obviously, those bloggers like to add every thing related to blogging and hence the necessity to add a post explaining “How to start a blog?” because anyone who is thinking of starting a blog will be eagerly searching for such a vital  information for them.

Why do people start blogging?

Generally, people start a blog due to any of the following two main reasons.

Start a blog Reji Stephenson

1.To make money online

It is getting really hard for people to find out a proper job even with proper qualifications and experience. The problems of unemployment exist anywhere in the world. This makes millions of people all over the world look for opportunities to make some income online. Many of them end up starting a blog thinking that they can make a living out of it. But, the saddest part is that only a small percentage of bloggers among them can make any success. Most of these blogs started in that way will end up nowhere and eventually they abandon it when they realize making money online is a difficult task.

2.To showcase a talent

Showcasing an existing talent is another motivating factor for some bloggers. You might have a talent in photography, and hence, you decide to have a photography blog. Some people have expert knowledge in a certain field, and they may be good at presenting it through videos. They may like to start a video blog. If you are curious about Video blogging, you can watch few wonderful Video blogs from one of my previous post titled “Top Must-Watch Vloggers From India” Then, some others have a talent in writing short stories, and they may opt to start a short-story blog to showcase their talent. So, the motivation to start a blog varies from person to person depending upon  their individual talents and abilities.

What made you starting a blog? Is it because someone told that you can make money online? You might have started a blog because you got the information that you can successfully run a business with the help of a blog

Is it just happened in your life very accidently similar to what happened in my case?

Maybe, you belong to the third category of bloggers where you already have a particular skill in some areas of your interest, and you may like to enhance it through your blog.

start a blogNow, it is your turn to let your fellow bloggers and other curious readers around the world to know about the reasons why you started a blog for the first time in your life. Please feel free to let us know about it using the comments column.

  2. Hi Mandy,

I originally started my blog because I too went on a course and it said ‘start a blog’. I actually went on the course to market a book I wrote and the blog was a supporting factor in marketing the book. Now I just blog rather than marketing, and I love it!

    Enjoy the journey!

    1. Hi Mandy,

Glad to hear from you that you went for a course and that lead you to start a blog. I can understand that now you like every aspect of blogging.

      Have a great day.

Hoping to have more interactions soon.

Thanks once again for your visit and the comment.

  3. Dear Reji,
I started my blog in 2007 , before that I used to pen down my articles in a book . But the idea to start a blog was in fact very effective for me in terms of visibility creation as well as networking with like-minded bloggers who shares the same topic of interest. As a blogger, you get the freedom to write what you feels to write , also the freedom to publish it whenever you want. Anyway thanks Reji for putting your views so succinctly by writing how to start a Blog . Also, blogging is fastly becoming a medium for famous and influential people to justify their point views when faced with criticism. So nutshell “blog” is a space you create in the digital domain to express one’s own interest.

    Thanks and regards

    1. Dear Prakash,
Glad to see you again and thank you very much for your comment. With respect to the concept in the post, I would say that you fit into the category of bloggers who started blogging as they already have a talent in writing. I agree with your point that blogging is fastly becoming a medium for famous and influetial lpeople to justify themselves when faced with any criticism. Also, I would like to add that there are a large number of Social media sites as well for celebrities to open up their mind. Here, I can say that the most important development is the fact that anyone can express their opinion on any subject matter irrespective of their status that they are rich, poor, celebrity or famous.

Hoping to see more comments in future too.

      Have a great time blogging.

      Once again thanks and regards.

  4. Hey Reji,

This was a short post. But it was totally worth my time on site. It’s normal for people to make mistakes when starting a blog. Infact, the common mistake most newbies make is that they don’t create out time to read enough information on what it takes to start a blog.

All the same, keep up your good work. And thanks for sharing this post with us.

  5. Hey man,
What a joy to be here again!
Hey man you have a wonderful theme with lot of changes
I like the new theme. And of course the new avataar too!
But I have a small suggestion, I do not prefer that cartoonlike look
instead I like the original and clear face of you LOL
Let us be original to the people who encounter with LOL
Its all up to the person, this is my suggestion, I have noticed some
fellow beings do not prefer to show up their face even in their avataar pic
and instead they add or show some lovely pics or writing quotes of famous people etc,
in this regard I had a suggestion with one of my favorite bloggers and in short while he got annoyed my suggestion and he got violent and he went all over the social media and said I am bullying him in social media, but my nature is that I say face to face when I feel one is so close to me, so in the person mentioned above it was the other way round and he unfriend me in his facebook too and but recently we compromised, and I send and invitation to join me in one of the round up and he shared his opinion to in my recent roundup post.

Oh I am sorry I wrote something more hope you will not get annoyed! and you will not behave like the other person for this issue, its all up to our desire not on the other persons but in my opinion its good to show our originality I mean our original identity to the people around especially in relation to internet writing
    Have a good day
    Take care
    Keep in touch
    Best
    ~ Phil
    Thanks

    1. Hi Brother Phil,

Glad to see your comment again in this post. Regarding the image, I am not changing the avatar picture at all so that while commenting and all, my original image only will show up. This cartoon picture I am pasting only at the side of my home page to see what will be the reaction of those readers who never know me before. Still, my identity is not getting hided as the “About” page will be showing all the details with the same old photograph in it. Even, on the home page, I will not be using it for long time. It may be there for few weeks as an experiment.

      Thanks and regards

  6. Hi Reji ,
I did started blogging for another reason, I did not know about blogging at all.
I had a website for affiliate marketing and started a course to learn about the internet
because I knew it will be important in the future and I may be able to help my grandkids.
This course was very good ,but they stopped it and did not what they promised. The best about the course was that I learned to know my very best friend which is an Indian young
man and we did other things online together, this is why I did stay with it. Another member of this unfinished course introduced me to the Gavin Mountford’s tribe and I learned to know Lesly and Monna and we did hangouts. My English was not good in writing and they suggested not to be afraid to write anyways and so I did. We talked about building a tribe and PAC was created , Lesly and Monna got busy and made it happen. This is how I came to blogging and learned over time to improve my English writing 🙂
This is how I got to blogging .
Thank you for this post and reminding on the “Why” 🙂

    1. Hi Erika,

Also, thanks for sharing your experience with Gavin Mountford, Lesley and Monna.

Hoping to hear more from you soon.

      Thanks and regards

  7. Hi Reji sir
Welcome back to blogging and very happy to be on your blog again.
We both are using the same wordpress theme but different layout.
There is no doubt your blog is looking stunning and awesome. And yes,, the way write this is interesting and attractive. And the images you have used in this post are also looking cool.
The topic which is found on almost all the blog is very important and what a newbie would read. Maybe for us, it would be insane but for targeted readers, it is awesome.
Yes, blogging is awesome. I am now making my way through it. Let’s hope it goes fine.
    🙂
Have a nice day ahead REJI sir.

  8. Hi Vashsishtha,

Glad to hear from you again and thank you so much for your encouraging words. I just checked your blog and saw the theme you are using. Yes, its look really nice. Even though the layout you choose is a different one, the site looks stunning.

  9. Hi Reji,
Good to read your blog again. I think that I belong in the third category of bloggers. I started out with an affiliate marketing group . A website was needed and I had someone create one at a very expensive cost. I thought that I could learn how to do that myself and I did. I now create blogs. So now I have particular skills in some areas, affiliate marketing, social media marketing and naturally came to enhance these through my blogs. I have 3 sites.

    1. Hi Kathryn,

Glad to see your comments once again in this blog. Thank you very much for sharing your experience with us.Hoping to see more comments from you. Have a great time.

  10. I started off in around 2004 to share family photos with friends and family overseas. The fascination with the web led me to do a web building course and I started building sites, with blogs, for others. I also set up a site to teach people about a genetic condition called Fragile X Syndrome – apart from, often very difficult to understand, scientific articles there was nothing online about it at that time. My aim was to translate all this into something more easily understandable. I still run a site on the topic to raise awareness.

Then I decided to share my experience and knowledge of blogging with others and Sueblimely.com was born. It’s not even a teenager yet. When Web 2 started I added social media to the topics. In those days I could really be unique. Now I’m competing with probably millions of others and sometimes wonder if I should continue with it.

Trying to make money online came much later – after my divorce and I was trying to mainly live on a carer’s pension. It was also another learning experience for me. I don’t think I’m complete without always learning something new.

    1. Hi Sue,
I am really thankful that you shared all your blogging experience in the form of a comment here. Good to hear about the different stages in your blogging journey. I agree with you that we are always learning something new when we indulge in blogging related activities.
      Keep sharing your insights again.
      Have a great time blogging.
      Keep motivated.
      Best regards
